SMC’s underlying philosophy is “the key to accurate surveying and mapping still lies in the skillful use of the right instruments and techniques guided by seasoned judgment”. To that end, SMC’s professional and technical staff has embraced the innovative use of modern technology to successfully complete a significant number of projects for highway, road, rail trail and bridge design in the United States and Ireland. These technologies include mobile (terrestrial) LiDAR, low-level color aerial photography and robotic total stations in an integrated surveying environment linked to real-time centimeter level GPS positioning systems. Locally, more than 150 project assignments have been completed for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to perform bridge and highway surveys using a combination LiDAR, aerial and ground surveys.
For some projects, the aerial survey or processed LiDAR data may be sufficient for preliminary design. As the design phases progress, SMC’s staff will supplement the base mapping data with conventional field surveys using robotic total stations to locate right-of-way monumentation, obscured utility structures and other features, obtain invert elevations of sewer and drain structures and elevation data to incorporate into a digital terrain model (DTM).
SMC’s value added services for each project may include the preparation of easement and/or taking plans in accordance with local requirements. For projects undertaken with aerial survey methodology, SMC may provide color digital orthophotos of the project corridor to compliment the field and aerial survey data.
